Memorable Moment Monday

What a wonderful holiday weekend we celebrated here at Cotton-Top Hills. We were all excited that WB was home for three days in a row, yippee. Our banister was installed and my new paint job that was destroyed was patched up quite nicely. Not perfect, but so much better than what it looked like when they first tried to install the banister.

Saturday we celebrated not only the fourth of July, but the birth of my second child Soph. She is 7 this year, hard to believe. She loves having cook-outs on her birthday. WB fired up the fire pit and we cooked hot dogs and roasted corn.
This year she wanted an apple pie for her birthday cake. It was store bought and I'm a little appalled by that. We were at Sam's and as I chased Little One throughout the store, WB and the girls were tasting all the samples. They tried the apple pie and decided it was good enough for Soph's party. I'm okay with that, I think, but I still cringe a little when I think about it. She's having a party with some friends later this summer and I will make up for it with a made from scratch cake!

WB purchased a new, used car. Bless his heart, he was so excited to have a car made in this century. So much so that he got busy cleaning out the garage that has needed some purging for quite awhile now. Now two cars can actually fit into it. Folks, for us this is a momentous occasion. Next is our little barn and when that happens the curse of the pack rats will be broken. Well, for a little while at least.

And I started cleaning out our room off the kitchen for our homeschooling room. We now have a suburban full of things to give away, between the room and the garage. I must say it feels very nice to be rid of so many THINGS.

Which leads me to ask the question what do you do with the things you no longer need?

Yard sale! Whatever doesn't sell, we give to charity. My boy isn't big enough yet, but at yard sales I've been to, the kids sell cookies, coffee, juice, or doughnuts to the early risers. Your 4th looks like a lot of fun. I love roasted corn! =)

Congratulations to WB! Cheryl and I have suburban with 258,000 and a truck with 184,000. We can't get a new one for 18 months to 2 years. At that point we will have reached a financial goal (if the economy holds!) that will allow us to get one. Our vehicles are a '95 and '99, so I understand the reference to "this century"! Hope you get 10 years out of the vehicle, at least. wb

Sales and donations! Or, hand down to other family/friends.

Great holiday/birthday, and I love that stairwell! Just beautiful.

1. Garage sale
2. Craig's List (This has never worked, but listing is free and I gave it a shot.)
3. Salvation Army for any leftovers. (Did you know they will pick up?)
4. Have you heard of FreeCycle? I have never listed anything on there, but it looks interesting.

I've done garage sales before, but the problem there is you have to accumulate everything into one place until the date of the sale. You have to advertise and price and in the end you're still left with stuff.

Now I just load my things into the car and donate them to my church's thrift shop. It's so much quicker, and goes to a good cause.

Natalie my girls would love to sell cookies at a yard sale!

Warren, I understand. WB's car had 260,000 miles on it and we figured it was time for a new one since he drives a total of 120 miles to and from work each day. But I would have liked to pay cash for it, that will be our next goal:)

Thanks Janna, the stairwell was one of those projects!

Connie, I will have to try some of those.

MeganRebekah that is what we have been doing too. You can get rid of it all at once and claim it on your taxes which adds up quickly:)

I am constantly cleaning and getting rid of stuff. Any kids clothes that are name brand or almost new I sell back to a resale shop. Anything like expensive toys go on ebay and the kids get the money. The rest is offered up for free on Craig's list or our homeschool list or is given to the baby's world charity at our church. I sometimes have a garage sale if I have enough stuff, if not, I will have one of those agencies like the kidney foundation come and pick it up. I love to clean out rooms and get rid of stuff!

It looks like you had a wonderful holiday:)
I love your bannister--especially the hardware!
What do I do with things I don't need? Goodwill!

Wow! The bannister is JUST GORGEOUS! Where did you get those holders--I have never seen anything quite like it and the color is also lovely! Way to go!!
