Writing Craft Book Suggestions

Happy Monday!

I have a question for you today. What is your favorite book about the craft of writing?

I’ve been reading the The Art of War For Writers by James Scott Bell. Several of my writing blogging buddies had recommended it, so I ordered it. I’m loving it. It’s simple and straightforward, yet packed with information.

So what writing book would you recommend to other writers?

Oh wow. There are plenty I've learned from. To name some of the top dogs:

Plot & Structure by James Scott Bell

On Writing by Stephen King

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

Escaping into the Open by Elibeth Berg

Write Away by Elizabeth George

and I also thought The Art of War...was amazing--a compact overview for writers.

Hope that helps. ;)

Hi Kara,

I love The Art of War. It's one of my all-time fav's now! I took a survey on Twitter about a month ago and compiled a list of everyone's favorite writing books. It's posted at the top of my blog. It's an awesome list!! But still, my fav for writing craft is J.S. Bell. I love his Plot & Structure and his Revision & Self-Editing.

How's homeschooling? Are you getting close to finishing your year? We're into our last week! Yay!

I've heard that book is so good! I don't have a favorite book. Actually, I haven't read any. It's really bad of me. I hope it doesn't mean I'm prideful because I hate reading non-fiction!
What I love are craft articles. I eat them up.

That's on my to read list. I'm glad your giving it a glowing review! Right now I'm ransacking the library and reading everything that's close to my genre. SOmetimes the best teachers are plain ole' books. ;)

I loved the books listed in the other comments, and I also recommend Carolyn See's "Making a Literary Life." It inspired me!

I have an award for you on my blog today!

I read a great book about writing the novel by Lawrence Block. That was some time ago. I have done some recent exercises with my friend, Teresa, but I don't remember the names of them.
